The Bruins have a heart beat! They used their recent 2 game road trip as a defibrillator for their season. Tonight they beat the Arizona Coyotes 5-3 behind a strong power play and better defensive play. The Bruins scored 3 goals on the power play tonight and Tuukka Rask was strong in net even though he was not tested much in the first 2 periods. Here are BostonPucks.com’s thoughts on the game:
1. The first power play unit is dominating
The first power play unit continues to look very good. The unit of Krejci, Krug, Bergeron, Spooner, and Eriksson, are moving the puck well and are getting scoring opportunities. I do wish they would shoot the puck a little more and get more traffic in front of the net. Krejci had a pass picked off when he forced a pass across the ice to Spooner, which created an odd man rush going the other way. I thought he maybe should have shot the puck instead. But we all know Krejci is a pass first player. Either way they scored three power play goals tonight (Krejci and Bergeron, 2). The Bruins have scored 7 power play goals in 5 games this year. If this unit can continue this success it will help take pressure off the inexperienced defense. The power play has never looked this good in the Claude Julien era.
2. Tuukka Time
For the first time this season Tuukka made timely saves to keep the Bruins in the game. Rask stopped two 2-on-1 chances by the Coyotes in the second period. He made another big save in the 3rd period to keep the game tied. The Bruins need Tuukka to be great if they have any chance of making the playoffs. Tuukka still gave up 3 goals tonight, but overall it was a much better performance by him.
3. Tyler Randell can return his bus pass to Providence
In limited ice time Tyler Randell scored another goal. He has 2 goals in 2 games and he looks like he will be sticking around a little bit longer. Randell put a well placed back hander past Coyotes’ goalie, Mike Smith for the Bruins first goal of the game, and it tied the game 1-1. It does not look like Max Talbot is going to get back in the lineup any time soon with the way Randell has been playing. Randell brings toughness to the 4th line and so far he looks like he has some finish to his game.
Torey Krug and Kevan Miller continue to play well. I have liked the way they have played on a defensive unit that has overall played poor so far on the season. Krug got two more assists tonight and Miller beat the bag out of Joe Vitale when the Coyotes had out numbered the Bruins in a scrum behind the net. Miller came to the defense of his teammates and Vitale paid the price. He did not return to the game after the fight. Krug is proving to everyone (this writer included) that he can be a top 4 defenseman. In my eyes he has passed every test so far this season with the increased responsibilities.
David Krejci continues his hot start to the season. To be honest with you I do not think I have seen him move this well in a while. He definitely was not moving this well last year. Maybe I just do not remember, but I think this is the best I have seen him play. Krejci has 9 points in 5 games (4 goals and 5 assists). Currently he leads the league in scoring. If he can continue to play this way and the Bruins are able to shore up the defense this team should be able to make the playoffs.
Lastly, I actually like the Coyotes new uniforms.
