(NBCSports.com) – Calgary made a roster move on Wednesday, signing blueliner Matt Bartkowski to a professional tryout. Though he was oft criticized for his play last season (in Vancouver), Bartkowski did log career highs across the board with the Canucks — under the watchful eye of then-assistant coach Glen Gulutzan, who’s now the head man in Calgary.
Good for Bart. Despite some on-ice moments that Boston Bruins fans didn’t enjoy he was always a likeable guy. Some one I always rooted for. After his one-and-done in Vancouver last season he returned to the Providence Bruins this year were he’s had himself a solid and steady season.
What makes this move “headline” worthy is that this kind of PTO deal is usually a pre-season or training camp invite type of thing. These aren’t something you see mid season. Which is probably why Bart’s connection to Flames coach Glen Gulutzan makes the most sense for him even being on their radar for a depth-D move.
Let’s hope this works out for Bartkowski. It’d be nice to see the perennial 7th defenseman turn this opportunity into some nice NHL game checks.
