I knew that title would get you to click. I fucking knew it.

So apparently in a non joking fashion Zdeno Chara said today that he would like to sign an extension to remain with the Bruins. An extension. Meaning, after this upcoming 2017-2018 season, the last of his current deal where his cap hit will also drop from $7 million to $4 million, the then 41 year old will be prepping for more hockey.

I actually don’t hate the idea. But it’s predicated on if he can physically still do the job and the youth on the way.

They Bruins will have a youthful Charlie McAvoy, Brandon Carlo, Torey Krug, Jeremy Lauzon, Jakub Zboril, Rob O’Gara, Matt Grzelcyk, Ryan Lindgren, and even a Wiley Sherman in the mix. Who knows who will actually stick on the latter half of that list. And we probably won’t know the status of Kevan Miller, Adam McQuaid, and Colin Miller until the Las Vegas expansion draft hits and we know exactly who the B’s are protecting. Lastly, we don’t know what the B’s will add through free agency or via a trade either.

As for Chara, he just led all Bruins defenders in goals (10) and time on ice per game (23:19) this season. And he was far more effective and mobile than the previous season.

If there’s a depth/PK role that his frame can handle at the ripe age of 41, and he accepts that role, then I give him the Jaromir Jagr treatment. A one year deal and keep it under two million. I mean shit, they’re giving Dennis Seidenberg $2 million next year to not even be Bruin. Chara continuing to mentor the next generation of blue liners would be pretty great too.

I know it may be a long shot, and a big ask of Big Z, but a capable veteran third pairing monster at the right price and term doesn’t upset me one bit.

Now is when you rip me and call me crazy.
